As a non-profit, we rely on various sources of revenue to pay our staff and contributors, and to offer high-quality content that is freely accessible to everyone. Vital to keeping The Local operating as an ad- and paywall-free magazine is our growing community of financial supporters. They include philanthropic foundations and individual readers like you.

The Local makes public all sources of funding above $5,000 per year as part of our code of ethics. In addition to these major financial contributors, The Local is supported by hundreds of individual readers who have generously donated various amounts—one-time, monthly, or yearly.

Interested in supporting our work? We have options!

Donate $

It’s really quick and easy through our secure payment portal. The Local is a Registered Journalism Organization, which means supporters get a charitable tax receipt for their donations.

Donate Securities/Mutual Funds

Would you like to give more and get more back? Donate your securities or mutual funds to The Local.

The Canada Revenue Agency does not apply capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. Capital gains are the increase in the value of your securities over the price you paid at purchase.

When you sell your shares for cash, you’re responsible for the tax due on the gain, even if you plan to donate the proceeds from the sale. If you pay the tax out of those proceeds, there’s less money left to donate. Your charity receives a smaller donation and you have a smaller donation to claim for your charitable tax credit at the end of the year.

But when you donate your securities directly to The Local, those capital gains aren’t subject to tax. This means your gift to The Local is a larger gift, and you’ll benefit from a tax receipt for the full value of your eligible securities or mutual funds.

You can donate securities to The Local directly via Canada Helps securities services online.

Recommend a Grant From Your Donor Advised Fund

Do you have a Donor Advised Fund? Recommend a grant to The Local—as a Registered Journalism Organization (RJO), The Local is a qualified donee and the Income Tax Act allows registered charities to make gifts to an RJO.
