The Local is nominated for six Digital Publishing Awards, including being recognized in the prestigious “General Excellence in Digital Publishing (Small)” category for a fifth consecutive year.

Last year’s life expectancy analysis, for which The Local teamed up with St. Michael’s Hospital to reveal deep disparities in life expectancy between different neighbourhoods in the city, is nominated in the data journalism category. “Another Year, Another Encampment, Another Eviction”—a project that chronicled five years of Toronto’s homelessness crisis through the experiences of one long-time encampment resident—is nominated in two categories: “Best Feature Article: Long” for reporter Brennan Doherty, and “Best Photo Storytelling” for photographer Nick Kozak.

“A Thousand Cuts,” Local reporter Wency Leung’s five-part series on the TDSB funding crisis, is nominated in the “Best News Coverage” category. And in “Best Arts and Culture Storytelling,” a category first for The Local, Carl Wilson is nominated for his feature on the withering state of arts criticism in Toronto, “The Life, and Slow Death, of the Toronto Arts Critic.”

“Last year we published some of the best work in The Local’s history, so it’s wonderful to see that work celebrated by the Digital Publishing Awards,” said executive editor Nicholas Hune-Brown. “The range of stories recognized here—from a culture essay to deeply reported features to the most ambitious piece of data journalism we’ve ever taken on—only reinforces how far we’ve come in five years. I couldn’t be prouder of the staff and contributors who make The Local the best place in the country to publish in-depth journalism.”

The nominations cap off an exciting week of recognition for The Local. On Friday, our series of life expectancy stories was nominated for the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s renowned Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism. On Thursday, The Local received eight nominations at the National Magazine Awards.
